   I have just been called by this lot tonight and offered a £2000 rebate as I'd paid my council tax on time for several years!!! She asked how I'd like to recieve my money and I asked for a cheque which I knew would be legit if she did but she asked me to ring the number and talk to her boss but it had to be immediate. I didnt ring back.

   I just had the exact same call - because I'd paid my tax (seemed to be a confusion between council and income!) I would get a £7000 rebate. I also insisted on cheque as I would not give my bank details and I was to phone this number and speak to senior treasury adviser "Robert Smith". I was also told that I would have to pay a fee to get my rebate. He also told me I shouldn't spend this money on gambling and drinking lol - really!!
   Don't get suckered!

   Hi, I received a similar phone call. I thought it was strange when my home phone number was read back to me but the first 0 was missing! I also told the lady that I thought this was very suspicious and she assured me there was nothing "auspicious" about this. Clearly I did not believe her. I was told because I had no convictions and I had paid my council tax on time every time, I would receive a £7000 reimbursement!!! Not very believable. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is! However, I did call the number out of curiosity as it was a London number, and after it rang several times, there was no answer. Now I'm just waiting on my phone bill to see whether I've been charged an excessive amount. The lady did also ask how I would like to receive the money, and she was somewhat disappointed when I replied, "by cheque"!
   
   So this is clearly a complete scam, and was obvious from the outset, however there are some naive and gullible people out there so beware!

   My dad was called and told to call this number and was told it was the treasury department and that he was due a council tax rebate of £7000 as he had not defaulted. Apparently they had a list of 3000 households to give the money too. The lady on the phone when he called it, was adamant that he had to give bank details and that they would not send a cheque. Luckily he did not give them but when I googled it there was a very similar scam alerted in Scotland.
