Started by asking for my husband and I thought he said telephone preference service. He then asked were we being plagued by nuisance calls. I said yes and he offered to stop them. Thats when I realised it was a sales call.
I told him I was on TPS to stop sales calls and I am not interested.
Also said I am reporting them to TPS and the ICO -

They probably instigate all the 'silent' nuisance calls you receive so they can tell you that you are being annoyed by nuisance calls. So of course if you pay them they may stop making the nuisance calls. Otherwise known as a 'protection racket' which is certainly illegal.

I have had a few calls now from this number. The first time I thought it WAS the telephone PREFERENCE service who I am registered with so I listened for a while until I realised they were trying to sell something. In the last call I said they were committing the very crime of making nuisance calls that they pretend they are trying to resolve. He hung up.

Just had a call from these people. They offered to stop ALL nuisance calls for ever with a one off payment of just £79.99. I told him I needed time to think about it, he is ringing back at five. In the meantime I googled the number. Thanks everyone. I am ready with my answer.

I received a call from 020 300 45597 this afternoon and answered with my customary BT_Exchange_+_last_6_digits of my phone number. A young woman said "Am I speaking to Mrs Jones?". I said yes and she said "Hello, I'm Portia. I'm calling from the Telephone Protection Service", to which I replied "Right ...". She asked "Are you getting a lot of nuisance calls?" to which I replied "Yes, all the time, and I reckon it's because our name is Jones". She replied "Oh, OK then" and hung up! I actually thought this was a joke - she was the least pushy telemarketer I've come across! (I suspect she won't last another week at this company with that attitude, but with a name like Portia, I don't think she belongs there anyway! ;) )
I couldn't find this number on www.saynoto0870.co.uk, but it did direct me to this website, so thanks to all other posters for confirming that this company is a bunch of scam artists! Interestingly, when I called this number back, I got a recorded (american) voice saying "Sorry, this number is not in service". Does that suggest the company is based in the US???
Like others, I'm registered with the Telephone Preference Service, so will now report this number to them, and to BT, in the hope that if enough recipients do so, they may just do something about it.bob replied 7/16/14, 5:07 PMshe got sacked, my jobs still safe though ;) hahah -

i bought a callblocker and it works perfectly fine, i spoke to somebody called Roni who was very polite and professional, these people need to get money from somewhere, so everyone needs to calm down!

This company is a scam artist as highlighted on BBC.
They promised one free and charged consumer £80
They promised another to take 3 installments and charged them £80
Oh and these things are available on eBay for £20
Also remember that many UK companies like BT and other service providers have call centres located in India so by using such a device you would block legisimate calls.
So we have a company fleecing people on the phone, trying to sell them something they could pick up on ebay for 4 times the price.
A company that will charge your credit card more than agreed
A company that even offers free product and charges you
A company that trys to trade under name of the authority protecting consumers.
If the message is not clear STAY AWAY from these people. Register at the official TPS site http://www.tpsonline.org.uk and if they call you after that report them to the TPS because that will incur big fines and may even get them shut down.

I got called by this number. I just said hello. After a few seconds of nothing they hung up. In view of previous comments for this number, I suspect they were waiting for me to give them my name, so they could make out they knew who I was. Fed up with these people, I get calls like this several times a week.

These scammers have appeared on BBC Consumer show, they used to trade as Telephone Preference Services but were forced to change it to Telephone Protections Services. On BBC they sent out dud cheques, denied they were the same company and took credit card details under false pretences; they said they needed card to verify whether they had dealt with the customer before, the customer had already been duped into buying a unit which failed, so he wanted a replacement. They then charged him for a 2nd unit.
They say they can ban calls from foreign call centres, this is a con as most foreign telemarketin calls are routed through UK Exhanges.

His response was "Shut your mouth" followed by a further indecipherable comment before hanging up.

Second call today from these people - unfortunately for them we don't answer their calls having made that mistake once. When answered previously the caller got very unpleasant when I wanted to know how they had got our number, who they were etc . . . but maybe asking for their home number so I could return the favour was the reason they hung up!

A polite chap called Alex said he was aware I had been receiving unsolicited calls. His company was supposedly able to provide a call-blocking device to eliminate silent and international calls, an upgrade to the standard TPS for a low weekly payment equating to a one off payment of £99.99. He quoted their premium rate customer services number of 08719891414 and said their was a cooling off period. He asked if I wanted to pay by Visa or MasterCard, at which point I said I would give it some thought and ring back on their number if I decided to proceed. He said "okay" and we brought the call to an end. As this was in itself an unsolicited call asking for money, I am not convinced it was genuine.

Why have the police not stopped this obvious fraud, vulnerable and elderly will definitely be taken in by someone saying they are from TPS,i was convinced at first?

I said that I am registered with the Telephone Preference Service but that he had used the word Protection and he rang off. Many could be fooled by this. The location on the map looks similar to the claimed origins of other scam calls. -

Introduced himself as Grant from TPS advising me 'they' had information of a wave of nuisance calls in my area and asked if it was affecting me also. Advised him I was already a member of telephone PREFERENCE service and he said that his company was Telephone PROTECTION service working as a partner of BT and that for 50 pence per week for 3 years they would provide something to clip onto my line to block calls nuisance calls. I asked how long his company had been in existence and he said many years. When pressed , he said more than 40 years. I asked for their web address and he gave me www.telephoneprotectionservice.co.uk. Guess what? They don't exist. Shocker. Reported this to BT apprx. Midday. 22 January 2014. Here's hoping they involve the police and get them shut down.

We had a call from a girl yesterday pushing this. Didn't really pretend they're the true TPS but just an organisation with an expensive product of doubtful efficacy. I had a very therapeutic rant at her and she got quite upset. Said she used to be a care worker as if this somehow justified making unsolicited sales calls. Ayyway she dried up once I pointed out the obvious irony of cold-calling to sell a cold call blocking service. -

Bloke was very friendly and implied he was from BT and TPS. said there had been a large number of unsolicited calls in the area and offered a service to stop them. Hung up when I pressed him about price and told him I wouldn't pay. Scarily convincing to vulnerable people!
