Now that PPI insurance claims are a thing of the past, the new daily phonecall involves making a claim against life assurance that has been mis-sold. Queue the unsolicited, fishing phone call from a Pakistani/Indian sounding man... I didn't get his name.
He rang from a mobile phone (07986 585865) and stated he was "from the Review Team" and wanted to ask a few questions about current market trends. The subject immediately turned to life assurance, what type of policy I had and how much we paid for it.
I was sat at the computer whilst this was going on, and as I regularly do anyway, I Googled the company. He ended the phonecall by thanking me for my time. Seemed legit.
The initial results brought up websites which record telephone numbers from pestering/scammers trying to [sell you something]. Upon looking at a few, they all came up with a Manchester phone number, so I decided to look a little deeper into the company. The Review Team Ltd, is, in fact (as I later discovered), a legitimate company of solicitors, who are in the business of pursuing claims against mis-sold SIPPs (Self-Invested Personal Pensions), although their Facebook page is spartan and their website (albeit with SSL security) is simple and could be knocked-up in an hour.
I phoned the company - WHO HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED THEIR NAME - based in Wales. They have never been based in Manchester. I got straight through to one of the solicitors (strangely enough), who took the matter very seriously. After checking, she stated that they don't employ any men of Indian/Pakistani origin and the mobile telephone number is not recognised.
