   Received a call message from “HMRC” on this number asking to call back before 08.00pm as a matter of urgency giving my NI number. Sounded very authentic. (SCOTISH ACCENT - MALE) After search found to be a SCAM.

   Dodgy scum alert. My wife thankfully has half a brain. All these misc comments from 'J' or 'X' or 'Genuine' stating the authenticity of these calls are very dodgy indeed.
   Request details in writing to be sent to the address they obviously must have on file. It makes me laugh when people call you and ask for your name and details to verify who you are. Douche bags.

   thank you. When I get asked 'for security can you confirm x,y,z' I always say 'I am unable to disclose confidetial information, can you confirm who you are trying to reach, their full name, date of birth and address'

   This is a genuine HMRC number used by their Debt Management office for both inbound and outbound calls.
   
   If you've had a letter saying you owe HMRC money recently, this number should be on it. If you haven't then get in touch with HMRC. It's probably a Tax Credit overpayment. The Tax Credit helpline will be able to confirm that you have one, and that you need to talk to Debt Management.
   
   Debt Management and Tax Credits are two separate units within HMRC, both using different systems. The Tax Credit helpline will NOT be able to see that you have had a call made to your home.

   I also got a call from this number yesterday 15.04.13 to ring back but this number is unknown to me.Are they fraudsters?

   SCAM
   This number claims to be calling from HMRC, I missed a call so googled the number, people say it was HMRC a fraudulent call, so I called HMRC on their usual 0345 number and they have not tried to contact me, they even left me a message telling me to phone back before 8pm on the 17th April 2013 quoting my NI number, the lady I spoke to at HMRC told me that they only ask security questions when you phone them, never when they phone you!

   You're wrong. This is a GENUINE HMRC Debt Management helpline number. They're probably calling about an overpayment for tax credits. Call the Tax Credits helpline number and ask if you have an overpayment from a previous year. You will have. They'll transfer you to Debt Management and you'll end up talking to the people who called you in the first place. Unfortunately Ken doesn't know what he's talking about.
